Musings Of A Wordsmith

The Wallace Works Blog where our resident Wordsmith and others talk about what is going on and what may come.

NaNo Uh Oh

I wonder how many writers have a love-hate relationship with NaNoWriMo.

For those who don’t know, Nano is a sort of contest/goal, event where people attempt to write a novel in the month of November.

If you’re an aspiring writer it feels like this mystical event that you can participate. And it brings LOTS of new talent to the field every year, it’s fantastic.

For me though, I dunno. I love the idea of Nano, I want Nano to continue being a thing until we’re nothing but data orbiting the last iron-star in existence.

But me?

Now it feels, well I was going to say daunting but that’s not right, I can DO a novel’s worth of writing in a month. It feels like an interruption, and I feel like I’m doing m fraternity (writers and authors) a disservice by not engaging with abject mania every year.

I WANT to.

But I just can’t.

I spent most of November editing, refining, cutting and polishing the works I’d already scheduled. And I might have done that ALL November were it not for my writers group.

Several fantastic women who keep pushing forward, keep perfecting their craft and keep pushing me to improve.

I’m not DOING Nano this year but because of my writers group I don’t feel like I’m failing my fraternity. I AM writing, I am putting down new words, growing stories from seeds to flowers and you, my fans and friends will reap the harvest.

I know this may be more milk-sop then you may want or expect from me so thank you for your indulgence.

Take care, and thank you.
