Musings Of A Wordsmith

The Wallace Works Blog where our resident Wordsmith and others talk about what is going on and what may come.

I Never Grew Up

I Never Grew Up

I’m a giant child. And happy about that.

That is not to say I never matured. Maturing is a different thing than growing up. Maturing is recognizing the importance of things outside yourself. Growing up is leaving behind “childish things.”

I am mature (supposedly). I recognize the responsibilities I have to myself, my family, my friends, community and the world. I do not stay up late so I can be cognizant in the morning. I do not drink freely because alcoholism runs in my blood. I do not pout and curse when my romantic overtures are rejected (again).

Being mature is being responsible.

But dude, I did NOT grow up and I hope I never do. I allow myself moments of uncomplicated happiness, as evidenced by the toy collection. I can let my mind drift and immerse myself in places that are not real. I love my r.p.g.s, I have fun getting beaten in first-person-shooters. And I will collect more books than I can ever read until the day I die because having a library is awesome!

Don’t grow up. Don’t loose magic, whimsy and fun. And most of all don’t let someone else take that from you. Certainly do not let someone else demand of you that you must. Such a person either does not understand the great benefits to your mind, body and soul for having such delight or they do and want to cripple it.

We are not made to work, suffer and die. We are meant to dream, explore and love. And part of loving yourself is feeding that part of you that experiences uncomplicated happiness. This isn’t hedonism. This isn’t chasing pleasure for its sake at the expense of your life. This is happiness. Feeding the good parts of you so that you become good and feed the good in those around you.

They say hate is a fire that can spread and consume. Well so is happiness, it’s infectious and if we are all to be set upon by a plague let it be a plague of smiles. Let yourself be happy, nd hopefully that will help you make others happy too.

I think I’m rambling in circles now so that will be enough this eve.

Take care and God bless;
