Fragments of Fiction

Fragments of Fiction is where you will find small snippets from the various settings throughout Wallace Works.

These may be character pieces, setting sketches or anything else. Generally coming out on the third Thursday of the month as part of the news letter they are collected here for those looking to just read the prose.

Snow Day - Shattered Skies

Second Thursday of the month and you know what that means!

Wait, you don’t because this is my first time doing this so here goes. The second Thursday of the month I will be a small piece of writing. In the bus. we call these writing prompts, or plot-bunnies. So we’ll try this once a month and if I can get ahead it’ll be more.

Each piece will be a bit about the characters in the stable and though they will not be excerpts from any story they WILL be in continuity and true to the characters.

So this writing prompt is “Snow Feelings” and stars Al’rashal and Urkjorman.

Snow Day

Al’rashal quaked in equal parts discomfort and irritation. She hated the snow. She insisted they live in the Basking Plains specifically because it never got cold enough for snow. But now they had been hit by some freak storm out of the north that blanketed everything in white and she was stuck out here, arms wrapped to her chest and not enough layers to keep the cold out.

A cloud of ice swept through the air, coating her cheeks in the frigid particles as Urkjorman rolled around in a mound of snow like a giant dog. It would be endearing if she wasn’t so irritated.
“Oh come on,” enthused Urk. “Let us have fun!”

“Easy for YOU to say. The cold doesn’t bother you.”

A lopsided grin twisted Urk’s face as he lumbered over to her, “I could warm you up.”

Al narrowed her eyes at her husband, leaning back slightly, “I bet.”

He pulled her into a hug, which she only half resisted. Even covered in ice he was warm, steam drifted from the minotaur and melted the ice clinging to her lashes. It was better, maybe not good, but better. One of his massive hands tilted her chin up and a moment late his lips met hers.

Lightning rolled through her body as their tongues wrestled for control. She twisted her fingers into his fur, holding him tight as heat surged through her body pushing the cold away. As their lips parted she could swear little motes of electricity drifted between them.

She was warm.

“Wow,” breathed Al. “What was that?”

“Juden’kai is the lord of winter does not allow his servants to freeze. I shared that blessing with you.”

Al hesitated a moment and cast off the thick blanket she’d been hiding under. The chill air caressed her skin like a cool breeze on a warm summer’s day. The tiny rivers of melting snow that meandered through her fur felt like a delightful tingle not frigid knives now. “Is this how you always feel in the snow?”

“Yes.”

She leaped into a snow bank kicking up a massive cloud of ice that washed around her and teased her skin. I could get used to this.

“The blessing will keep you warm no matter what you do, or wear,” said Urk.

“Oh?” asked Al as she rolled into the snow sending up another explosion of twinkling flakes. “For how long?”

“More than an hour. Was there something you wanted to try?”

“Oh yes,” admitted Al as she rose to her hooves. “There’s something I’ve always wanted to do in the snow.”

Urk drifted closer, “I had some idea you might.”

Al covered her husband’s face in a ball of loosely packed snow and released a long peel of laughter before springing backward out of the minotaur’s reach.

“You bitch!” laughed Urkjorman as he scooped up a mound of snow and chased his wife.
