Let That Child Be Weird
Let That Child Be Weird
I don’t talk about the day job much, for various reasons not the least of which security and safety.
That being said I interact with some “weird” children. Really all children are weird, however too often I find fellow “adults” trying to reign in that weirdness and shame it and I can only think.
Why?
Let that child be weird.
Childhood is FOR being weird. They’re learning how to be people, and they’re trying to have fun while doing it. Shouldn’t being people BE fun?
And if you’re lucky, that weirdness is infectious. We forget how much we can learn from children. We learn wonder, patience, magic, and how amazing the world can be when you’re just learning it all.
It creates great new ways to relate to them, and to teach them. Their favorite movies become morality plays. Their favorite characters let us touch on culture. Their favorite games let us teach them about friendship, sharing, and sportsmanship.
And if they want to do this while wearing a ninja headband or unicorn horns or a flowing cape? Then so be it.
And hey, maybe you can wear cat ears and a cape too.
I’m sure you can pull it off.
Fun doesn’t stop when you become an adult. But more importantly than that, don’t become an adult that stops the fun of children. So let them be weird.
Take care my friends, and God bless.
